Ayr United face five more finals

AYR UNITED hope the best away record in the league will help them over the finishing line to the Second Division title.

But Brian Reid’s men may have to win all five of their remaining games to shake off the threat of fast chasing Raith.

The sprint to the flag looks set to go all the way with neither side giving an inch. Despite seven wins and two draws in nine unbeaten games, Ayr hold only a one point lead.

United now face back to back trips to Arbroath and Brechin, knowing nothing less than six points will guarantee they stay in front.

Reid said: “If we win every game between now and the end of the season, we don’t have to worry about anyone else. People talk about nerves but when I was a player, nerves before a big game always spurred you on.

“We’ve won nine games away from home which is the best in the league and we’ve had good victories at East Fife and Raith in the last few weeks. We always take a great travelling support and that’s a big factor.

“Our confidence is high and we are scoring plenty of goals but there could still be a few twists and turns.”

Reid now has happy selection posers as the title race enters the final furlong. Saturday’s 3-1 win over Stirling was achieved without 17 goal Bryan Prunty while Mark Roberts was kept on the bench.

Prunty is still doubtful with a hip problem while Roberts, who iscarrying a hamstring strain, declared himself fit but wasn’t risked.

But in came David Gormley and Alex Williams to steal the show. Gormley hit a double, taking his tally to nine for the season, whileWilliams, despite limited starts, grabbed his eleventh.

Reid admits: “It’s a nice problem to have and we are fortunate to be blessed with such good strikers. Mark wanted to play but I didn’t want him to aggravate the injury and risk losing him for the season. However, he trained on Monday and should be OK.

“The two strikers who came in have not done their chances any harm by scoring goals and causing defenders problems.”

Skipper Chris Aitken returns to the squad after serving a one match ban while Murray Henderson is back at the club after completing a 28 day loan stint at Arthurlie.
