Ayr United draw a blank

Ryan Stevenson

THERE are going to be a few twists and turns in this title race yet.

Ayr United drew a blank against Peterhead on Saturday despite the Blue Toon finishing the game with only nine men. Chances were few and far between in a first half that failed to spark to life. The best opportunity of the half fell to Scott Walker but his mis-hit shot came off the post.

Ayr started the second half more purposefully and Stevenson shot wide when put through by Mark Roberts in the first move of the half. Peterhead responded when they caught Ayr on the break but McKay's effort went wide of the post.

Peterhead had keeper Kula to thank when he managed to divert a 25 yard effort from Stevenson away.

The visitors went down to ten men with 13 minutes of the match remaining, Graeme Sharp was given a straight red after a lunge on Dean Keenan. Ayr threw everything at the Peterhead defence for the remainder of the match and sub David Gormley should have sealed victory but somehow managed to steer his header wide.

Peterhead went down to nine when Stuart McKay picked up a harsh second yellow in the 90th minute after a coming together with Ryan Borris. Neil Cooper lost his cool at this point with the official's decision, punching the dugout in disgust. Ayr remain top by a point over Raith Rovers.
