Ayr United top the table

Ryan Borris

AYR United went top last night despite only drawing with Queen's Park.

After winning convincingly in this season's previous fixtures against the Glasgow side, it was expected that the Honest Men would again prove too strong but the Spiders had different ideas. Ayr struggled to get a foothold and it was Queen's who looked the more likely with their first chance coming when Watt fired straight at keeper Stephen Grindlay.

Ayr almost went in front when Brough almost put through his own net but his blushes were saved as goalkeeper Cowie palmed his header onto the crossbar.

The visitors went ahead after 34 minutes when debutant Odenewo rounded Grindlay and hit the back of the net.

Ayr failed to respond and they went in at the interval trailing. Parity was restored seven minutes into the second half when Borris bundled home from close range after a Ryan Stevenson cross had made its way to the back post. Ayr took the game to the Spiders but a succession of attempts on Cowie's goal failed to produce a winning goal. The Honest Men had to settle for topping the table due to their superior goal difference.
