Ayr United victorious at Hampden

Mark Roberts

HAMPDEN Park again proved a happy hunting ground for Ayr United as they left with the points after a 3-0 victory.

The scoreline was a replica of the team's first visit there this season when Bryan Prunty grabbed a hat trick. The striker failed to get on the scoresheet this time with the goals coming from Mark Roberts, Kenny Connolly and Ryan Stevenson. The Honest Men will face the Spiders again this Wednesday at Somerset and will be hoping for a repeat outcome.

Ayr are now only a point behind leaders Raith Rovers but have a game in hand. Raith will play third placed Brechin City on Tuesday night and anything less than a victory will leave Ayr the opportunity to go top with a victory against Queen's Park.

Roberts put the visitors ahead after 13 minutes when he collected a Connolly pass, turned on the edge of the box and fired high into the corner. The advantage was doubled after 24 minutes when the favour was returned by Roberts and Connolly slotted home from close range.

Ayr took their foot off the pedal and coasted through the game. Stevenson's goal nine minutes from time sealed it after he had been set up by that man Roberts.
