Ayr United's Scott scoops grassroots award

AYR United star Scott Agnew has scooped a major national award.

He was named most supportive professional player at the sixth annual SFA Grassroots Awards, sponsored by McDonald’s and the Sunday Mail.

Scott, who combines playing with being a community coach with the Ayr United Youth Academy, gives a large amount of his time voluntarily to coaching local youngsters.

Scott said: “I am incredibly proud of this award as it’s very special to be recognised for helping my local community.

“Football has always been a huge passion of mine and I get so much out of encouraging and supporting youngsters who want to get involved.”

Football development officer David White added: “Scott is always willing to go that extra mile to help coach youngsters.

“He travels all over South Ayrshire in his community coaching role and has come into his own as a vital member in our Everybody Active programme.

“Working with disabled young people can bring many challenges and Scott has risen to meet them. He also gives up a lot of his spare time to assist our community development work.”

The Academy, via the Football in the Community team, has taken over the responsibility for re-establishing Ayr United Girls FC. And they were delighted to see Fiona McAvoy win the award in the best teacher category.

Fiona, who is deputy head at Cairn Primary in Maybole, has been an enthusiastic supporter in helping school children, particularly girls, become involved in football.

Scott and Fiona were presented with their awards by football legend Kenny Dalglish and Scotland manager George Burley, with a picture of Somerset Park forming an appropriate backdrop on the podium.

Academy director David Watson attended the dinner along with United chairman Lachlan Cameron, David White and co-ordinator Shaun Ferrie.
