Ayr United through to face Kilmarnock

THE Ayrshire derby is on! Ayr United swept aside junior side Lochee United at the second time of asking before a very healthy crowd of 2,049 last night.

The game was over as a contest before it reached the hour mark. Neil Mcgowan put Ayr one up after 36 minutes with a header, it was his first goal for the club.

Only that solitary goal separated the teams at the interval but David Gormley scored with another header to put Ayr two up after 52 minutes and Brian Prunty made it three after 58 minutes when he slotted home a Ryan Borris cut back.

Ayr dropped a gear and Lochee played some decent stuff for the remainder of the match. Substitute Paul Blackwood scored a consolation for the Dundee side after 76 minutes.

In case anyone needs reminding Ayr United now have an all ticket home tie against Kilmarnock in the fourth round which is scheduled to be played on 10 January 2009.

A full match report by Mike Wilson will be in next week's Ayrshire Post.
