NO wonder Kilmarnock don’t enjoy their trips to the seaside.
Ayr have beaten their county cousins four times in the last 12 years on cup business, even throwing in a win at Rugby Park for good measure
1996: Killie 0, Ayr 1: Robert Connor marks his second stint as an Ayr player by dumping old team Killie with a spectacular strike. It should have been two – a Gregg Hood effort crossed the line but wasn’t given.
1998: Ayr 2, Killie 0: goals from Jim Dick and Ian Ferguson give Ayr victory before a packed Somerset in a Valentine’s Day mud bath. Bobby Williamson’s cup holders don’t take the defeat well – they wanted the tie called off because of the atrocious conditions.
1999: Ayr 3, Killie 0: two sublime Andy Walker penalties and a goal from Andy Lyons had fans walking on Ayr. Killie, who were second in the SPL at the time, limp home with more red faces.
2001: Ayr 0, Killie 0 (Ayr win 5-4 on penalties): ten man Ayr are still too good, despite having Paul Sheerin sent off after a clash with Andy McLaren.
Neil Duffy scores the clinching penalty in the shoot-out to spark wild scenes of jubilation after Chris Innes misses for Killie.
