Ayr United hope to cash in on cup carrot

CHAIRMAN Lachlan Cameron is overjoyed at the chance of a crack at Ayr’s deadliest rivals.

A Scottish Cup clash against Kilmarnock on January 10 would bring Somerset Park’s biggest crowd of the season.

Lachlan, who was at Hampden when the draw was made, said: “First and foremost we have to beat Lochee in the third round but there is now a carrot hanging out there. We know what we are playing for and it’s a big incentive.

“We’re doing everything we can to attract short term finance after the stadium deal fell through. We’re working on it every day and are looking for investment either by loan or by equity but it’s very difficult in the present climate.”

The chairman says he is willing to sell his stake if it will help the club go forward. And he revealed that he has never taken a penny from United in his four years since arriving from America.

Cameron added: “The team is playing better than ever and scoring lots of goals. There are droves of fans out there and if we can get them back to Somerset it will help our cause.

“The more we get through the turnstiles every week the better it will be.

“We’ve a bit of work to do before we can even think of facing Kilmarnock but there is no doubt it’s a cracking draw for the club.”
