Ayr United hope to dim northern lights

AYR are relishing their first clash with Aberdeen in more than 20 years after landing a plumb draw in the CIS Cup.

Jimmy Calderwood’s SPL side will travel to Somerset on Wednesday, August 27 for one of the ties of the second round.

And United boss Brian Reid insists his men will rise to the task of facing top level opposition.

Reid admitted: “We’ll be big underdogs but these are the games players relish.

“We want to test ourselves against the best and this will be a great chance for the boys to face a Premier League team and give it a go.

“We’re under no illusions about how difficult it will be, but it’s one for the fans to look forward to and we want a good cup run this season.”

Ayr boast ex-Don Bryan Prunty in their ranks, while Ryan Stevenson was at the centre of a transfer row between the clubs in January.

Aberdeen wanted to take Stevo north on trial – a move which sparked outrage from United.

Prices for the game, kick-off 7.45pm, are £12 adults and £6 for children.
