TEENAGER Lloyd Kinnaird has become the second Ayr United Academy player to sign a first team contract.
The full-back, who’s signed a two year deal, joins Alistair Woodburn in stepping up to the full squad from the youth ranks.
And Under-19s boss John McCaig says their success proves kids can crack the big time at Somerset Park.
He insisted: “Hopefully Lloyd’s signing will send a message to others.
“It has been a very difficult first season for the Academy at under 19 level and while other teams might be interested in results and trophies at this level, our job here is to develop players potential and our trophies are when our players pull on that Ayr United first team shirt.
“Lloyd has worked very hard at his game over the past year and has developed tremendously as a player.
“He always turned in a professional performance, irrespective of what position he is asked to play.
“He is always willing to listen to advice and learn and put it all into practice.”
First team boss Brian Reid added: “I have been very impressed with Lloyd when he has trained with the first team squad and he is a player who has a lot of potential.
“Hopefully he will continue his development training with the first team. Although he is still eligible to play for the under 19 squad, I would like to see Lloyd continue his development and challenge for a place in the first team sooner rather than later.”
And United’s Head of Youth Development, Mark Shanks, revealed: “For a young organisation like the Academy to have two players signed by the club is a fantastic achievement and testimony to the hard work that has been put in by a lot of volunteers working for the Academy.
“This also sends a message to young local players that the quality coaching provided by Academy can provide you with the opportunity to continue your development as player and if you are good enough, then you have the chance to play the game professionally with your local club.”
