Craig Brown: "I'm backing Ally MacLeod"

FORMER Scotland boss Craig Brown has hit back at claims he snubbed Ally MacLeod and stressed: nothing could be more wrong.

Brown has been accused of putting the boot into fans’ plans to have Ally inducted into Hampden’s Hall of Fame.

And he was quoted as saying Ally hadn’t done enough as Scotland boss to take his place among the elite.

But Brown told the Post he thought the legendary Ayr boss, who had three stints in charge at Somerset Park, was more than worthy.

Brown led Scotland to the 1998 World Cup, 20 years after Ally’s ill-fated trip to Argentina.

He said: “This is a hall of fame, not a hall of success, not that Ally’s results were bad. Beating Holland was some achievement.

“Players who win 50 caps are inducted and all I did was ask what was the requirement for a manager.

“Alex McLeish won seven out of ten games as Scotland boss so he surely deserves to be inducted on his rate of success. Everyone loves Ally and I would never say a word against him.”
