AYR UNITED have told injury hit stopper Martyn Campbell that he still has a Somerset Park future.
And they knocked back an enquiry from big spending juniors Irvine Meadow who want to bring back the powerful defender two years after he left them.
Newly promoted Meadow are keen to team up their old favourite with former Ayr man Barry McLaughlin in a new defensive partnership.
But United boss Neil Watt insists that the powerful 26-year-old, whose career has been blighted by injuries, is still very much in his plans.
Watt said: “There has been an enquiry for Martyn but that is as far as it has gone.
“However, Martyn is very important to me and is a big part of my plans.”
The capture of former Stranraer and Queen of the South centre-half Murray Henderson and utility defender Craig Higgins means Ayr are well covered at the back.
They join Eddie Forrest, Chris Robertson and Craig Pettigrew in the chase for central places.
But if Campbell can prove his troubles are behind him, he can still have a key role to play as United go all out for promotion.
Watt was impressed by the condition of the squad when they returned to training at Rozelle last Saturday.
Further sessions were held in Glasgow on Monday and Wednesday while a double stint is planned for Saturday.
Watt said: “I’m really happy with what we have but the transfer window is open for another couple of months.
“I am always looking to improve and still have space left to add if I feel it is necessary.”
Drouthy Bar fans are meeting on Saturday at 1pm to discuss travel plans for next season. All welcome.
They will be running a bus to the Annan tournament on Saturday July 14. Seats from 286757.
