NEIL Watt has hailed new fitness coach David Johnston as his signing of the summer.
The Ayr boss reckons Johnston is the man to get United’s players sweating buckets in pursuit of points.
And he says the fitness regime will help the leaner, meaner Ayr in their challenge at the top.
Watt revealed: “David is going to play a crucial role at the club and will be a very important part of the management team.
“I’ll be demanding a lot of the players physically, as I do at all times, and David will be integral to that.
“His work will be far ranging and deal with injured players who need special sessions as well as improving the fitness of the squad in general.
“I’m delighted to have him on board and I’m sure we’ll see the benefits of him being here. It’s another positive move.”
Watt has turned his attentions to off field matters after swooping to sign his sixth player of the close season last week.
Dundee defender Craig Higgins should be the last face through the door at Somerset for the forseeable future, with Watt happy to play the waiting game.
He admitted: “We’ll see what’s around nearer the start of the season and I’m still looking to add a bit of cover up front.
“But otherwise things should be quiet for a while and we’ll not rush into anything.
“Craig will be a great addition to the squad and is a versatile player who can fill a number of positions in defence or midfield.
“He’s played a lot of football for a guy of only 21 and I know exactly what I’m getting with him.
“It’s always important that I know as much about the character as I do about the player I’m signing and Craig will add to what we have here. Our squad will be substantially smaller this season than last, so someone like Craig is going to be a key man.”
