OUR PLAY-OFF DREAM IS ON

REVITALISED Ayr United insist their promotion play-off dream isn’t dead and buried.

And caretaker boss Brian Reid believes if they keep their winning run going, they can still catch fourth top Brechin.

With six games to go, Ayr trail the Glebe Parkers by eight points but have yet to play them at Somerset.

And both have to meet top two Morton and Stirling in an exciting run-in that could go to the wire.

Three straight wins and ten goals scored have breathed fresh life into Ayr’s season which three weeks ago was facing a fight against relegation.

But Reid and goalie Mark McGeown, who are holding the temporary reins, have had a startling response with a bold 4-3-3 formation paying instant dividends.

Reid said: “We are only concentrating on the next game at Peterhead a week on Saturday but certainly haven’t given up hope.

“It is still mathematically possible to catch Brechin and there is lot of football to be played. You should always have something to aim for and we want to finish the season strongly and see where that leaves us.”

Reid added: “A lot of the boys are out of contract in the summer so they want good performances to secure their futures. All we can do is keep winning games but Mark, Tommy Tait and myself are delighted at the way things are going although it’s all down to the players.

“We can’t ask for any more and to score ten goals is pleasing especially as we had been struggling in that department.

“However, it was disappointing to lose three against Alloa as that has not been like us but we were disrupted with a few injuries.

“That’s two games in a row we have shown great character to fight back after being behind but I would much rather go a goal up.

“But it’s exciting for the fans and I am sure they enjoy see us scoring goals rather than a 0-0 draw.”

Reid would love to land the manager’s job on a permanent basis and has already been interviewed by the Board.

He said: “I have made my intentions clear. Ayr are a very good club with a great support and this would be a great job for me.

“I have spoken to the Board and now it’s up to them but obviously results will hopefully have helped me.”

With no game this weekend because of the Scotland v Georgia international, Reid plans to call the players in for a Saturday morning training stint.

He said: “We are not sitting 20 points clear so we can’t afford to have a jolly.

“It’s the chance to get in a good training session in better light and work the players.

“I am also trying to arrange a bounce game next week for some of the players who have not been getting a game recently.

“With no reserve games, we need to keep up match fitness as the size of our squad means players can be called in at any time.”
