Claire Johnston wins women’s singles at Ayr Bowling Week

CLAIRE JOHNSTON was crowned ladies singles champion at Ayr Bowling Week after an-all east Ayrshire final.

The Auchinleck player beat Cumnock’s Jean Sykes 21-17 at Northfield.

In the semi-finals, Claire beat Anne Brown (Newton Park) 21-16 while Jean beat clubmate Isabel McKnight 21-17.

Alex Higgins (Stranraer) took the gents title with a 21-12 win over Paul Shields (Peter Boyle).

In the semi-finals, Shields beat Malcolm Baillie (Coylton) 21-18 while Higgins beat Gordon Hamilton (Darvel) 2-16.

The junior girls singles went to Dawn Anderson (Kincaidston) who beat Carrie McLean (Cumnock) 21-17.

Twelve-year-old Blair Davidson (Blacklands), who suffers from autism, was a real crowd puller as he lifted the boys singles.

The brave lad hit back from 15-2 down to beat Ryan Currie (Cumnock) 21-20 after winning his four knockout games by the same score.

The mixed pairs went to David jnr and Lily Kiltie (Port William) with a 21-10 win over Bryce Greenhill (Kirkcolm) and Winnie McCulloch (Maybole MP).

Winners of the gents pairs were Stranraer’s David and Michael Kelly. They beat Allan and Scott Davies (Castle Kennedy)13-12.

Newton Park’s Anne Brown and Liz Campbell lifted the ladies pairs with an11-10 win over Castle Kennedy duo Trish Henderson and Vivien Taylor.

Mark Conlan and Liam Conlan (Port William) retained the junior pairs with a 10-9 win over Stein McGaw and Liam Murphy (Kirkcolm).
