HOLDER David Kelly shrugged off a painful back injury to remain on course to win an historic third consecutive Ayr Bowling Week title.
The Stranraer man opened with a 21-6 win over Derek McCabe (Newton Park) and then beat James McIndoe (Castlehill) 21-10 before rounding off with a21-12 win over Stephen Longair (Northfield).
Eight of the seeded players made it through to the last 32 with the other half being knocked out earlier. The biggest casualty was second seed Jamie Houston (Prestwick) who lost 20-21 against Alex Higgins (Stranraer).
Third seed Joe Williamson (New Cumnock) also lost by the same scoreline against former Ayrshire director Jim Shields (Wattfield).
Only two seeds remain in the last 32 of the ladies singles. 1994 and 2000 champion Jean Sykes (Cumnock), the number three seed, had a 21-18 win over Mhairi Lindsay (Auchinleck).
Fourth seed Alison Lamont (Cumnock) beat Margaret Davis (Forehill)21-9. Top seed and defending champion Joyce Dickey (Hawick) lost 21-11 to Lily Cuthbert (Ayr Indoor).
Scottish singles finalist Maureen Shimmons (Annbank) lost 21-14 to Trish Henderson (Castle Kennedy).
