Indoor bowling: Prestwick senior gents march on in Knockout Cup

PRESTWICK senior gents made it to the next stage of the Scottish Senior Knockout Cup with a 59-54 win over Blantyre at Auchinleck.

There were wins on two of the four rinks as Prestwick made hard work of a perfect start. They now face Galleon at Ayr on Wednesday in their last 16 encounter while Ayr play Paisley at Prestwick.

The Prestwick selectors have named the following team for their match at Ayr: Rink 1: David Brown, Willie Fulton, Hector Berretti, Jim Fortune; Rink 2: Scott Watson, Jim Ross, Dougie McKie, Michael Higgins; Rink 3: Alec Thomson, Tom Howson, Joe Reid, Alan Paxton; Rink 4: Willie Kennedy, Willie Ferguson, John Docherty, Morris Sturgeon.

The Ayrshire Seniors League continues on Saturday with Prestwick playing Ardrossan and Irvine against Auchinleck with Galleon being the venue. A good win will put Prestwick in a strong position to retain this trophy.

Rink 1: David Brown, Willie Fulton, Jim Fortune, Michael Higgins; Rink 2: Willie Kennedy, Hector Berretti, John Docherty, Morris Sturgeon; Rink 3: Scott Watson, Jim Ross, Dougie McKie, Alan Paxton.

The gents beat Dumbarton 78-66 at Ardrossan in the prelim round of the Scottish Knockout Cup. The team struggled for a large section but eventually came home with a creditable win over the dogged Division One side.

Prestwick will now play Portobello at Whiteinch in the next round a week on Saturday.

Prestwick ladies won a rink, drew a rink and lost a rink as they beat Galleon 40-38, and gained a bonus point, in the first week of the Ayrshire Ladies Fours League. Rink scores: K Mitchell 16, D Marshall 16; M Wells 15, J Docherty 8; E McKinlay 9, H McAllister 14.

In the Scottish Young Indoor Bowlers Association playdowns, Prestwick qualified in the triples with Adam Grant, Andrew Weir and Jordan Slaven winning their qualifying group at Auchinleck.

The pair of Darren Weir and Craig Cathie won two of their three encounters but just missed out on qualifying as Ardrossan won the pairs section. The finals are at Bainfield later in the season.

This Saturday, Prestwick play Auchinleck in the Bobby Sutherland Memorial Trophy. This is the annual challenge match between the junior sections of both clubs and will be hosted by Prestwick from 10am to noon.

This Sunday sees the remainder of the Ayrshire playdowns contested at Ardrossan, Galleon and Prestwick. This will finalise the line-up for the Ayrshire finals at Auchinleck on Sunday, March 20.

On Sunday, Ardrossan host the ladies singles, gents pairs and gents triples. Prestwick host the junior singles, ladies triples and gents fours while Galleon host the gents singles, ladies pairs and ladies fours. Play commences at 9.30pm with the afternoon session at 1pm.

Prestwick has some forthcoming events that are open to all and tickets can be purchased by contacting the club.

The ladies cash bingo is on Friday, February 18 and tickets are just 50p. The Time of Your Life show will visit the stadium on Sunday, March 13 with tickets costing £8.50 which includes a knife and fork buffet.
