PRESTWICK had a good first week of Scottish League action with comfortable wins for the senior and ladies sides and a narrow away defeat for the gents against the current league champions.
After a bye week in the first round of matches, the seniors team got their league campaign underway with a 69-48 home win over East Kilbride.
There were wins for three of the Prestwick rinks with only Cliff Eade falling to defeat against Tom Crawford. Other scores: Morris Sturgeon 15, John Douglas14; Michael Higgins 25, Alec Day 10; Alan Paxton 23, Tommy Taylor 5.
On Saturday, Prestwick travel to face Auchinleck. Rink 1: Willie Kennedy, John Lindsay, John Docherty, Morris Sturgeon; Rink 2: Scott Watson, Willie Fulton, Dougie McKie, Michael Higgins; Rink 3: David Brown, Tom Howson, Joe Reid, Alan Paxton; Rink 4: Hector Berretti, Jim Ross, Jim Fortune, Cliff Eade.
It was one way traffic in the ladies match with Prestwick taking a 14-2 lead after the first end of their match with Irvine which included a full house count of eight for the rink skipped by Betty McKinlay.
Prestwick dominated throughout and won on all four rinks with the highest up being Kathie Mitchells 49-11 win over Janette Irvine. Other scores: Wilma Ogilvie 38, Pearl McMaster 8; Betty McKinlay 32, Ena McCartney 15; Val O' Neill 26, Margaret McGowan 7.
There is one enforced change to the ladies team for Saturday’s trip to East Kilbride. Rink 1: Doreen Wilson, Dorothy Nimmo, Jean Paterson, Kathie Mitchell; Rink 2: Margaret McRonald, Ann Boyd, Muriel Cowley, Betty McKinlay; Rink 3: Ella Caddis, May Hood, Barbara Alexander, Wilma Ogilvie; Rink 4: Anne Gibson, Ina Hamilton, Margaret Wells, Val O' Neill.
Prestwick gents lost by six shots away to Lanarkshire. There was success for the rink skipped by Gary Martin with the other three skips falling to narrow defeats.
Team Manager Robert McCulloch has named the following side for Saturday’s home match against Coatbridge.
Rink 1: John Keir, Chris Duffy, Stuart Reid, Gary Martin; Rink 2: Lee McCulloch, Jordan Slaven, Andy Kilday, Drew Boyd; Rink 3: Allan Hendry, Craig Cobbledick, Brian Fulton, Robert McCulloch; Rink 4: Junior Cole, Mark Kerr, Alex Cathie, Paul Boyd.
A gents rink and a ladies rink represented Prestwick at the Ayrshire Directors Day on Sunday at Auchinleck. The day was a friendly and competitive one to start the Ayrshire Indoor Bowling season.
Prestwick finished tied with Ayr on 10 points. Auchinleck won the trophy edging out the Galleon on shot difference after finishing tied on 12 points.
This Sunday, the club will host the David Bell Triples with teams from Auchinleck, Ayr, East Kilbride, Galleon, Irvine and Prestwick taking part. The competition will run all day in a round robin format with the winners announced around 6pm.
It is still not too late to join Prestwick for the coming season. There are limited spaces in most of the league competitions and the possibility of late entries in some of the national competitions.
The coaching class is now up and running with play on a Monday and Wednesday morning starting at 9am with the junior coaching class on a Sunday from 10am to noon and on a Thursday from 4-6pm.
The fashion show to be held at the stadium on Wednesday, October 20 is now a sell-out and the club is hopeful that the ladies bingo (November 12), Christmas fayre (November 24) and the ladies Christmas party night (December 11) are just as successful.
