Prestwick bowler Cliff Eade plays for Scotland over 50s

PRESTWICK’S Cliff Eade was part of the Scottish team that played at the Over 50s International Series in North Wales last weekend.

Scotland beat Ireland by two shots, lost to England by three and then beat Wales by 21 shots. Ireland won the series by one shot from Scotland after they beat England by 11 shots.

Prestwick seniors open their league campaign with a home tie against East Kilbride. The selection team of Jennifer Reid, Michael Higgins and Jim McKean have named the following team:

Rink 1: David Brown, Tom Howson , Joe Reid, Alan Paxton; Rink 2: Willie Kennedy, John Lindsay, John Docherty, Morris Sturgeon; Rink 3: Scott Watson, Willie Fulton, Dougie McKie, Michael Higgins; Rink 4: Hector Berretti, Jim Ross, Jim Fortune, Cliff Eade.

Anne Wilson is the new selector for the ladies team. They open their campaign with a home match against Irvine.

Rink 1: Doreen Wilson, Dorothy Nimmo, Jean Paterson, Kathie Mitchell; Rink 2: Margaret McRonald, Anne Boyd, Pat Sutherland, Betty McKinlay; Rink 3: Ella Caddis, May Hood, Barbara Alexander, Wilma Ogilvie; Rink 4: Amy Brown, Ina Hamilton, Margaret Wells, Val O'Neill.

The gents face a hard opening encounter against defending champions Lanarkshire at Wishaw. Manager Robert McCulloch has named a youthful team as he looks to try to maintain the club’s Premier League status.

Rink 1: Allan Hendry, Craig Cobbledick, Brian Fulton and Robert McCulloch; Rink 2: Junior Cole, Mark Kerr, Alec Cathie, Paul Boyd; Rink 3: Lee McCulloch, Jordan Slaven, Alan Williams, Drew Boyd; Rink 4: John Keir, Craig Cathie, Stuart Reid, Gary Martin.

On Sunday, the club will send one gents rink and one ladies rink to Auchinleck for the Ayrshire Directors Day.

Coaching classes start at Prestwick from Monday, October 4. They are held on a Monday and Wednesday morning from 9am. There are beginner and advanced sessions so new players and those who have tried the sport before are welcome.

Junior coaching is up and running with sessions on a Sunday from 10am to 12pm and on a Thursday from 4pm to 6pm. Anyone under 18 is welcome.

The entertainments committee have set a busy calendar for the first half of the year. Fashion show on Wednesday, October 20 (tickets £3); Ladies cash bingo on Friday, November 12 (tickets 50p); Christmas fair on Wednesday, November 24 (entry free); Ladies Christmas party night on Saturday, December 11 (tickets £7).

David Gourlay Bowls visits the stadium today (Thursday) with a roadshow from 9am to 4pm.
