Auchinleck players win cap calls

FOUR Auchinleck indoor bowlers are celebrating cap calls for Scotland.

Jean Sykes, Claire Johnston and Josephine Williamson were selected for the international series at Perth in March while Stewart Anderson will play in the gents international series.

Claire Johnston attended East Ayrshire Sports Council’s awards ceremony to receive the podium award for athletes possibly competing in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year.

Auchinleck seniors beat Newton Stewart 66-64 at home. Scores: W. McArthur 23, J. Sproat 15; Dvd Mitchell 18, W. Murdoch 11; J. McCracken 14, I. Govan 21; W. Sykes 11, J. McGarrie 17.

The juniors beat Galleon 6-2 at Kilmarnock. Scores: K. McKenzie 7, C. Burns 16; S. Lowrie 15, J. Donnelly 5; C. McClue 16, C. Ferrie 7.

The gents lost 76-70 at home to Lanarkshire. Scores: S. Rankin 23, R. Gordon 17; D. McClue 12, J. Meikle 27; G. Johnstone 24, J. Simpson 18; D. Watson 11, R. Grant 14.

Auchinleck beat Irvine 4-2 in the Ayrshire fours at the Galleon. Scores: Dvd Mitchell 29, T. Clark 12; W. McAarthur 35, M. Lister 12; T. Murdoch 11, J. McDonald 28.

All the Scottish league matches now take a break for the holidays. The next matches are on Saturday, January 9.

This weekend is the play downs of gents and ladies national four bowl pairs championship.

On Saturday, Claire Johnston and Coleen Cowie represent the ladies against Allander at Lanarkshire. Stewart Anderson and David Wilson represent the gents against East Kilbride at Coatbridge. Both ties at 9.30am.

If both teams are successful, they will play another match at the venues at 2pm. Then the games will all be played at Coatbridge on Sunday.

The club will run an open triples sponsored by CISWO. Play will start at 11am. Entries are still open so phone the club if you are interested in playing.

The entertainment committee will draw the Christmas raffle at 5pm.

On Sunday, the Baird Bowl competition will be played. 12 noon to 2pm: Ochiltree v Lugar and Galston v Indoor; 2-4pm: Auchinleck v Mauchline and Cumnock v Sorn.
