Ayr races is washed out after heavy overnight rain

AYR Racecourse's St Andrews Raceday fixture was called off early on Tuesday morning after 27 millimetres of rain fell overnight left the course waterlogged.

Clerk of the Course Emma Marley said: “It was an easy decision to make. In addition to the 27 millimetres, another 10 was forecast so I had no option with the coursewaterlogged."

Tuesday's meeting would also have been the first jumps fixture of the season at the track and a healthy crowd was expected.

Lindsey Smith, sales and marketing manager, said: “A lot of work had gone into the preparation and everyone was looking forward to it."
