Dave Stewart quits the ring

AYR’S two time British lightweight title challenger Dave Stewart has retired just weeks after almost grabbing a potentially lucrative Amir Khan fight.

Dave, 32, said: “I finished with a record that I’m very proud of. To have fought for the British title is a great achievement in itself but the fact I came close twice in entertaining fights with Jon Thaxton and Lee Meager means a lot to me.”

Former Mainholm Academy pupil Dave was based in London where he worked with trainer Tony Sims.

He said: “I’ve got a few options for the future but I’m going to be spending a lot more time in the Far East. Ever since I spent a year in Hong Kong more than ten years ago, I’ve developed a fascination with South East Asia and kept in touch with the friends I made there.”
