FAST food chain McDonalds is increasing the qualifications its staff can attain – by unveiling plans to introduce the “McPHd”.
The company already has accreditation to offer qualifications equivalent to A-levels, but wants to move into the world of higher education.
David Fairhurst, McDonalds’ chief people officer, explained: "One day I'd love to see us doing a PhD. I definitely think we can go as far as we can.”
He added the company’s current awards power made it “a university in its own right”.
In 2008, McDonalds was one of the first companies given accreditation by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to offer qualifications to A-level standard.
And since the courses were introduced, more than 2,500 people have signed up for a scheme covering “basic shift management”. This covers marketing, human resources and customer services.
A degree equivalent course is already in the works.
McDonalds is respected in the industry for providing high levels of employee education and runs some of the most respected in-house courses on the high street.
