ScottishPower to create 340 jobs

An energy firm is to create 340 jobs to support its retail business.

ScottishPower said 300 of the jobs will be in customer service in Glasgow while the remainder will range from boiler engineers to back office support staff.

Chairman Ignacio Galan said: "Despite global financial uncertainty, the energy sector has the potential to become an engine of economic growth and recovery. Indeed, more than ever, the industry's role as driver of investment and job creation will be crucial for future prosperity."

Mr Galan's announcement was timed to coincide with an appearance at the Scottish Low Carbon Investment conference in Edinburgh.

The energy firm has already outlined investment plans which could create about 1,500 jobs upgrading the electricity network.

About 300 engineers, apprentices and trainee positions were announced in February.

Last month, the company welcomed more than 100 graduates, apprentices and students.

Outlining the new customer service roles, Neil Clitheroe, of ScottishPower, said: "The Glasgow area has a strong talent pool that is attractive for recruiters and we are delighted to be able to continue to offer employment opportunities in the city."

The company will begin construction of a new office complex on the corner of St Vincent Street and India Street next year.

It is expected to accommodate about 1,500 staff when it is completed in 2015.
