Murder conviction appeal lodged

A man jailed for life for murdering an 80-year-old woman in her home is to challenge his conviction in the courts.

Jenny Methven was found dead at her cottage in Forteviot, Perthshire in February.

She was subjected to a sustained and brutal attack which left her with fatal injuries to her head and body.

William Kean, 46, denied murder but was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow after a 10-day jury trial last month.

A judge ordered him to serve at least 22 years behind bars before he can be considered for release.

Kean now intends to appeal against his conviction and sentence, lodging a notice with the courts of his intention to do so.

The move means a full hearing before senior judges at the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh is likely to take place in due course.
