Woman dies after fire at cottage

A woman has died in hospital after a fire broke out at a cottage.

The woman, 65, was rescued by firefighters from the kitchen area of the two-storey property at Crawlees Cottages, in Mayfield, Midlothian, on Tuesday afternoon.

She was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, but died a short time later.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said three appliances attended and that around 20 firefighters had tackled the blaze.

She said the service and police had launched a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire.
