Scotland shivers - and worse on way

Scotland is expected to shiver as cold weather grips the country after a night of sub-zero temperatures.

The mercury was predicted to drop to -6C (21.2F) overnight from Thursday into Friday.

On Friday temperatures inland are expected to struggle to reach 3C (37.4F), though it may be slightly warmer on the west coast where it could reach 5-6C (41-42.8F).

Forecasters warned that the weather is likely to worsen across Scotland at the weekend with snow moving in and cold temperatures continuing.

Nikki Berry, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "A rain, sleet and snow mix will be moving east across Scotland on Saturday.

"In the early hours there will be rain in the far west and as it comes into Ayrshire and Glasgow there might be snow for a time on Saturday morning, turning to rain.

"Further east it's likely to fall as snow well into the afternoon, with several centimetres on high ground but some likely at lower levels too."

Temperatures are likely to remain low at 1-2C (33.8-35.6F) in the east and 2-3C (35.6-37.4F) in the west on Saturday.

Sunday is likely to be mainly dry.
