Police officer attacks up by 600

Assaults on police officers have jumped by more than 600 in a year, official figures showed today.

There were almost 7,000 attacks on police in 2008/09, according to the Crown Office, while six officers a day on average are assaulted in Glasgow.

The figures were branded "wholly intolerable" by Liberal Democrat justice spokesman Robert Brown.
