C diff-related deaths reach high

The number of deaths caused by the hospital bug Clostridium difficile reached a new high in Scotland last year, it has been revealed.

The bug either killed or played a part in the deaths of 765 people in 2008 - compared to 597 cases the previous year.

In 2008 the bug was the main cause in 248 deaths and a "contributory factor" in a further 517, according to the General Register Office for Scotland.
