Automatic early release to be axed

The Scottish Government is acting to scrap the system of automatic early release of prisoners half-way through their sentence, a minister has insisted.

The claim by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill came the day after notorious "crime clan matriarch" Mags Haney, 66, was freed from jail having served half of a 12 year term for heroin dealing.

She was released on licence from Cornton Vale Prison, Stirling.
