Kyle Academy: 11 March 2009

S3 PUPILS and the Fair Trade co-operative were joined by pupils from associated primary schools on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 4, in hosting an Active Citizenship on Global Awareness event based on Fair Trade Fortnight and Comic Relief.

The event was arranged to coincide with the visit to the school of Cornelius Lynch, a banana producer from St Lucia in the Caribbean, who was the main highlight of the event.

MRS Reilly, Pupil Support Coordinator, in association with South Ayrshire Council’s Education Department, have organised a programme for a group of young people to help them develop skills for life and skills for work.

The group faced a major challenge when they took part in an outdoor education challenge. They had to face their fears and make jumps of 50ft and 100ft drops. Having conquered their fears, many went back to the 100ft drop several times. Their next venture is a trip on Tuesday, March 10, to James Watt College to begin the process of planning for the future.

THE MUSICALS Appreciation Group have had a fantastic year, going to see performances such as Flash Dance, Boogie Nights, Mary Poppins, and most recently Thriller. Their last trip this session will be a visit to Chicago at the Edinburgh Playhouse in May.

PREPARATIONS are well under way for the second primary netball festival at Kyle Academy on Monday, March 23.

A date has now been set for the primary 6 netball and football festival. This event will take place on Wednesday, May 27, from 9.30am to noon at Kyle Academy.

IN addition to providing football coaching for young people, Ayr United have also offered to provide support for the work of PC Munn and the Eco-Council in reducing litter in the playground and local community. Councillor Eddie Bulik arranged a meeting between the head teacher and Lachlan Cameron, chairman of the club.

CAMPUS police officers, head teachers and senior officers from the police, education and children’s services and community safety met this week to review the progress of the campus officer scheme. The team considered the very positive findings of the recent project evaluation and identified areas for further development/clarification. A steering group has been established to take this forward.

ALL principal teachers and senior managers met after school on Tuesday, March 3, to discuss a range of issues including budget matters, Curriculum for Excellence and self-evaluation.

HALF of the fourth year group have been taking part in a week of work experience. Staff have been visiting the pupils at their placements to check on their progress. Reports so far are very positive.

THE NEXT meeting of the Parent Council will take place on Tuesday, March 31, at 7pm in the staff room.

THE SCHOOL will close for its Easter break on Friday, April 3, at 2.30pm. The school will reopen on Monday, April 20.
