Prestwick Academy

A WARM welcome to Elizabeth Auld who has taken up the post as teacher of music.

S1/S2 PUPILS have been working on their mini sagas over the past weeks with the final date for submissions on Monday, December 1. The competition, organised this year by Miss McDermott of the English department, is open to all pupils, though the focus is on the junior school. Pupils have to write a mini saga in exactly 50 words, with the best ones sent to the organisers who then select the winners.

ON Monday, November 17, Prestwick Academy held a Standard Grade S3 and S4 hockey festival at Whitletts Activity Centre, led by Miss Murray from the PE department in Prestwick Academy.

The festival was a huge success with teams from Girvan Academy, Carrick Academy and Queen Margaret Academy. The horrific weather did not dampen the spirits of the pupils, with Prestwick Academy winning all of their games.

Miss Murray of the PE department said: “I am grateful to Ian McCreath from Ayr Hockey Club who visited to give the pupils some words of advice and the opportunity to develop their hockey skills.

“Without the help of some of our S5 pupils the festival would not have been quite as much of a success, so thanks to Sarah Jackson, Dylan Roberts, David Munro, Stephen Bicker and Stephen Cooper.

“Thank you to all participating schools, especially to the teachers who brought their pupils along. And thank you to the sports co-ordinators who were able to help out. ”

A GREAT time was had by all at the recent Prestwick Academy Primary 7 Enterprising Maths Challenge competition on the morning of Tuesday, November 18. Teams from Glenburn, Heathfield, Kingcase, Monkton and Symington Primary Schools and an S1 team from Prestwick Academy all attended. The six teams participated in various group activities, from a speed round and mental maths to a more practical round.

The morning was rounded off in the form of a maths relay, where the pupils were competing in a relay while answering maths questions. Monkton Primary were announced the overall winners, Symington Primary were second with Glenburn Primary being third.

Special thanks go to Mrs Clark, Mrs Happell, Miss McComb and Miss Howie for organising the morning’s activities.

A TEAM of third and fourth years from Prestwick Academy recently attended the Scottish final of the 2008 Enterprising Mathematics competition on Thursday, November 20. The team of Nicola Gibson, Paddy Millar, Calum Park and Kirsty Watson travelled to Jordanhill campus in Glasgow, where 58 other teams had travelled from all over Scotland to attend.
