THE SENIOR Charity committee have held their final fund raising event of the session. Strictly Talent, in aid of the Scottish charity Children First, was well attended and enjoyed by all. The night was split into two halves, the first of which was based on TV's Britain's Got Talent, and the second on Strictly Come Dancing.
The event was judged by Mr Bradley (DHT), Mrs Mahaffie of the Biology department and pupil judge Kirsten Nicholson (5C2), as well as guest judges Jim and Eleanor Young (local Laroc dancing specialists).
The first part of the night was won by S3 singing duo Chloe Easdale and Lauren McPike, with second place going to another S3 singing talent, Jodie McDermott. The dance competition was won by S6 pupils Monica McElwee and Mark Smith.
To end the night, a highly entertaining dancing performance was given by Mr Warrander (French) and Mrs Kelly (Music).
4A SMALL breakaway group from the school choir performed recently at Newton Church.
The performance included solos and duets, both vocal and instrumental from Evin Fulton, Lynsay Brown and Lynsey Cowan.
All choir members, accompanied by Mrs Kelly and Mrs Spreadbury of the music department, visited London for the day as a reward for all their hard work and commitment throughout the session, including their successes at the Ayrshire Music Festival.
The group visited all the city attractions including Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Horse Guard Parade, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Harrod's and Hamley's toy store.
The Music Department hosted their Summer Concert last week.
The choir's final performance of the session was at the school prizegiving on Thursday, June 19.
4AYR Academy had success at the Ayrshire Schools Athletic Championships at Dam Park Stadium on Wednesday, June 4. The following pupils were medal winners:
Kelly Wilson-double gold medal winner for the senior girls discuss and shot putt events; Stacey Carey-silver medal for senior girls long jump; Gavin Kerr-400m silver; Robert Kirkland-100m and 200m silver; Johnathan Thompson-senior boys 200m bronze and Euan Aitken-senior boys long jump bronze.
Also, Gavin Kerr has been selected to compete for the Ayrshire U15 team in the Scottish Schools Inter District Championships at Grangemouth on 18 June.
4S3 pupils Andrew Clarke and Russell Lockie celebrate a successful first year of publication of ‘Drive Times’ their car review magazine, published by Ayr Academy library.
There is a Special Lotto Draw in the June issue, where pupils and staff can buy a lucky numbered magazine and win a prize. Andrew and Russell are pictured with their display in the school library.
4A GROUP of 25 S3 pupils, accompanied by Mr Robinson, Mrs Campbell and Mr Warrander, went on a four day excursion to Belgium recently.
he group participated in the Ceremony of Remembrance at the Menin Gate in the Ypres area where Gillian Cobbledick and Iain McKenzie laid a poppy wreath on behalf of Ayr Academy.
Other historically significant places visited by the group included the Langemark German cemetery, Flanders Field museum, Tyne Cot cemetery, Passchendale Memorial Museum and Hill 62 Museum.
The group then travelled to Brussels where they were invited to the European Parliament by MEP Struan Stevenson.
4IN THE art department, prizes for Achievement and Progress within their Homework Sketchbook went to Joanne Hunter and Kirsty Heron in S1 and Heather Brown and Russell Lockie in S2.
Nicola Hughes in S3 has won third prize of £50 in the Ayr Guildry Craft competition for her submission of 'The Beach', which is a small soft pastel study taken from her Intermediate 2 Visual Arts Unit.
The Art Department's Piece of The Month for June is a homework piece by Heather Brown of S2.
