SQA exams running well at Girvan Academy

SQA exams have been running successfully at Girvan Academy, with most pupils turning up on time and working to the best of their ability.

The S5/6 pupils went on study leave in preparation for their Intermediate and Higher exams.

And everyone wishes them the best of luck, especially those who are leaving.

The school’s RME classes in S2 and S4 competed in the Learning for Life poster competition, in which pupils were very successful at regional level last year.

Winners are: 4.2: 1, Louise Dodds; 2, Lisa Morrison; 3 equal Steven Clark and Nicole Clark. 2B: 1, Anna Taylor; 2, Andrew Murphy; 3, Rebecca Boyd. 2D: 1, Fraser Shennan; 2 equal Alison Noble and Ayden Phillips; 3, Aiden Challis. 2E: 1, Kerry Lindsay; 2, Dylan Brown; 3, Amber Nichol.

The competition allows pupils to explore their own values and look at inspirational figures. They will receive their prizes and certificates in June, as well as having their entries considered for the West of Scotland awards.

Girvan Academy Craft Club held a coffee morning in the staff room to raise money for Ayrshire Hospice. A total of £75 was raised, and thanks go to all who donated home baking ,and staff for generous donations.

S2 ASDAN pupils Bob Campbell, Michael Connolly, Abbie Davidson, Kirsty Hendry, and Ross Robertson have been busy with their community challenge.

This involved planning a suitable planting design for the raised beds in the school grounds.

Plans have come to fruition with a huge variety of shrubs and other perennials being planted over the last few weeks.

The plants were bought from the Mansfield Garden Centre, thanks to money from pupil council and enterprise funding.

The only concern during the lovely dry spell was been keeping the plants well watered, and this was done on a regular basis, making the planters and raised beds look beautiful and a credit to the pupils involved.

A group of S1 pupils attended the Ayrshire Special Games on May 21 at the Magnum Centre in Irvine.

The all-day event allowed pupils to participate in a variety of potted sports, including badminton and football.

The pupils also had the chance to interact with others, as most of the teams comprise of a mixture of students including some in wheelchairs.

The Eco-School project held a successful textile recycling project, which raised £65 towards their other ventures.

Thanks to everyone who brought in their unwanted textiles.

A very enjoyable afternoon event at the University of West Scotland (Ayr Campus) was attended by a group of S3 pupils. They had the opportunity to visit recording studios and session rooms which form part of the technology available to students of Music, Media and Film.

The afternoon ended with pupils judging several college bands on their professionalism, sound quality and audience appeal. The pupils found this very informative and highly entertaining.

A group of 16 pupils from Girvan Academy took part in the South Ayrshire athletic festival at Dam Park in Ayr on Thursday, May 22.

A trip to the Loudoun Castle leisure park will take place on June 6, with more details to follow.

A group of 43 pupils, accompanied by staff, will on a water sports adventure trip to Mimosa Ardeche in the south of France in June.

The trip gives pupils the opportunity to experience several different water sport activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling and the very popular holiday experience of banana boats.

The pupils will also have the chance to try abseiling and climbing.

The action-packed trip will also be a valuable experience of French culture and an opportunity to try out language skills.

All that’s left to be said is Bon Voyage.

Buddy Training at Malin Court on June 9 will involve the new S6 Buddies and peer tutors.

The training day will provide a platform to develop useful skills and build self confidence.
