SECOND year science pupils at Belmont Academy certainly put the spark back into lessons when they made bath fizzes to raise funds for Namatapa School in Malawi.
When biology teacher Nathan Gilmour visited Namatapa last summer to hand over essential school materials it became immediately apparent that the school needed additional science resources.
Belmont Academy Science department, led by Mrs Jeanette Brennan, rose to the challenge and all 260 second year science pupils, in 13 sections, have since been working hard to produce teaching materials.
These include illustrated posters with photographs of the pupils doing various experiments and their outcomes.
As part of this project the pupils also decided to make bath fizzes to be sold to raise further funds for Namatapa school which has a school roll of almost 4000 pupils.
Mr Gilmour’s class alone have initially already raised over £100 and the entire school project looks set to raise a great deal more for the project.
Over the last two years Belmont Academy pupils have been supporting the work of Chisomo Children’s Club, Blantyre, Malawi.
