May 14 2008 Ayr Academy, Ayrshire Post
DURING renovation of her house, Mrs Searle (mother of former pupils Bethany and Lynsey) discovered a wasp nest (called a byke) under her floorboards.
She managed to uncover and remove it in one piece and has kindly donated it to our science department where it has attracted lots of attention. Judging by the size, it is quite old and obviously no longer in use!
It is in the biology department under glass as it is very fragile.
THE SENIOR charity have been busy putting plans in place for their final fundraiser of the session before they go on study leave on Thursday, May 15.
The Strictly Come Talent competition will be held in the school on Thursday, June 5, at 7.30pm and S2 pupils will be selling tickets in the main hall at intervals - prices are £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. All proceeds will go to the charity Children 1st. Rehearsals will start on Wednesday, May 14, at lunchtime and take place every Wednesday thereafter and will be supervised by Mrs Kelly, modern studies.
The dance line-up for the second half is looking good with pupil couples, staff couples and even staff/ pupil couples!
ON Friday, May 2, a group of 30 pupils from home economics and Spanish classes travelled to Silverburn shopping centre outside Glasgow for a tapas lunch at La Tasca. Pupils will now prepare Spanish dishes in class.
ON Wednesday, May 14, Mrs McCutcheon is taking a group from the music department to the University of the West of Scotland where second year university students will be performing a recital.
THE book club meet in the library every Tuesday lunchtime.
They are currently undertaking the Carnegie Medal Shadowing Scheme.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded every year to the writer of an outstanding book for children and young people. The Shadowing gives pupils the chance to read and assess the books shortlisted for the medal.
Pupils can log on to the Carnegie Medal Shadowing webpage and email question to authors, listen to author interviews, read online blogs from authors and read extracts from books. They can also submit their own reviews online, join debates and vote for their favourite.
