MP backs wage rise for Ayrshire agricultural workers

WAGES for agricultural workers in Ayrshire could be set to rise.

A proposal to increase pay packets by 4.1 per cent for the minimum workers’ rate has been backed by MSP Cathy Jamieson.

Rates payable from October 1 would be £5.73 per hour for those in the first 26 weeks of employment. The fee would be £6.20 for those employed for more than 26 weeks by the same employer.

The additional sum payable to workers with appropriate qualifications will be 94p per hour. Ms Jamieson said: “Farming and agriculture is facing a challenging time, particularly with rising energy costs.

“However, it’s important that the needs of workers and their families are taken into account and I hope that the proposed 4.1 per cent increase proposed in the minimum wage for agricultural workers goes ahead.”
