A COUNCIL has pledged almost £1 million to get extra police on the streets.
East Ayrshire Council has promised the cash over the next three years.
The initiative – Additional Police Resources – ensures high visibility patrols, plain clothes patrols, increases public reassurance and ultimately reduces crime rates.
East Ayrshire’s community planning partnership has vowed to provide £860,000.
Additional police resources have already made an impact on crime in teh area.
Serious assaults were down by more than 33 per cent between 2008 and 2009.
Council leader Douglas Reid said: “A partnership approach is essential if we are to provide a long term solution to tackling crime and the fear of crime in our communities.”
Superintendent Douglas Robertson added: “The main reason for the reduction in violent crime is the pro-activity of my officers, whose efforts are clearly being rewarded.”
