Hello folks, I hope 2013 is treating you well so far and you’re looking forward to the year ahead!
I recently met up with songman John Cooper of Irvine to talk about the life of a songwriter and his experiences with music, including being signed by the great American songwriter Jimmy Webb.
We also talked about a project John carried out with an Ayrshire poet called John Milligan many years ago.
The discussion was recorded for a podcast as well as the poetry and song project which is is available to listen to at www.mixcloud.com/littlefire
I think it’s extremely important to document and record poetry and song so that other people can experience and enjoy them as well as learn from them. It’s important to preserve our culture, our literature and our music.
John Cooper did just that back in the 1980s with a project to bring poetry to life in song with the poetry of John Milligan, a passionate poet and miner from Dreghorn.
The documented works are entitled Scotia, Rabbie’s Bonnie Jean, Rememberance and Enchanting Caledonia.
John Milligan had never had his poetry recorded before other than in his many books that he wrote in frequently and John Cooper was tasked with bringing his poetry to life by creating arrangements for the pieces of poetry.
Amazingly these songs have not been heard before in the public sphere and it gives me the greatest pleasure in being able to help them be experienced and enjoyed in the public domain.
You can hear one of John Cooper’s own compositions as covered by Jimmy Webb on Youtube if you search for Jimmy Webb ‘One of the few’.
I’ll have the pleasure of sharing a stage with John Cooper this Friday evening at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr for the very first live music night since its re-opening.
•Largs act Brown Bear and The Bandits have been tipped by some of the national press as part of their ‘Magnificent Seven’ to watch this year coming.
