IT’S a fare guess that this lot are in for an adventure of a lifetime.
And they hope to rack up a massive £5340 cab bill at the end of it.
For the trio have embarked on a madcap trip that will take them across Europe in a 20 year old taxi they bought on eBay for just £320.
This crazy team hope to raise more than a few laughs along the way.
Brothers John, 54, and Andrew, 42, Maitland, both of Ayr, and pal Derek Burns, 45, of Drongan, have signed up for the Crumball Rally.
They headed off for the start line at Bologne in France on Tuesday morning in their clapped out cab.
And if all goes to plan they’ll set off on Thursday and arrive at their final destination in Monaco a few days later.
John explained: “You have to buy a car for under £400, so we bought ours on eBay for £320.
“It had an MoT a few days after we picked it up and passed with just a couple of minor faults, not bad for an old taxi with 295,000 miles on the clock.
“We’ve spent a few pounds doing it up and we’re pretty sure it will get us there and back ok.
Sponsorship from a number of businesses will cover the cost of the cab, repairs and fuel. But the guys are hoping that Post readers will dig deep to support their fundraising bid for the Vanessa Riddle Appeal by logging on to their Facebook page and following their progress.
They are hoping to raise £5340 – that’s how much a fare would cost if were to hire a real life cab to take them to Monaco and back.
And they should know, for Derek is a full-time driver and taxi owner with Streamline in Ayr and Andrew is a part-time driver.
The trip will take the trio through some of the most stunning sights in Europe, including the Italian Lakes and the Swiss Alps.
But John insists that it’s all on a budget, so that the charity receives as much money as possible.
He added: “We’re doing this as cheaply as possible. For instance we’ve booked a hotel for the three of us, including breakfast, for £39.
“We’ll be posting updates of Facebook and Twitter along the way so people can monitor our progress and see what we get up to.”
