“IF IT wasn’t a challenge I wouldn’t bedoing it.”
Those could be the famous last words of Troon’s own Stephen Vallance.
For he is about to take on his most difficult charity challenge yet, motorbiking to the furthest north, south, east and west points in Scotland – in just one day.
And despite having already achieved a high flying career, previously chairing Troon Round Table, currently chairing the Live@Troon festival, running marathons and cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats for charity, Stephen says this will be the hardest thing he’s tackled yet.
He explained: “Doing this in a day will be a huge physical challenge.
“I’ve ridden bikes for years but I stopped for a while and just started back last year.
“I’m having to make sure I go out a lot now to try to build up stamina, even just sitting on the bike for so long will be hard going.
“To be honest I’m not even sure I’m going to manage but I’ll be giving it my all.”
Stephen and nine other brave bikers will set off at sunrise, 4.43am, from Scotland’s most southerly point, The Mull of Galloway.
They will then head to the most easterly point, Keith’s Inch in Peterhead, then to the most northerly point, Dunnet Head, before finally finishing at the most westerly point, Ardnamurchan.
This translates to around 750 miles.
And they have to do it all before the sun sets at 10.21pm while staying within the speed limits.
But Stephen, 50, insists that they will all be making sure they are safe.
He added: “We have advanced level instructors and policemen as part of our group and it’s all older, experienced riders.
“It’s going to be an immense thing to try and I’m looking forward to it.
“Hopefully we’ll have good weather and we’ll be able to really enjoy everything Scotland has to offer.”
All riders in the event will be raising money for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).
All donations are warmly welcomed and can be made through the JustGiving website at www.justgiving.com/teams/cardinalpointschallenge2012
