Kyle Academy golfers scoop a treble

YOUNG golfers from Kyle Academy grabbed the top three places in a schools competition, supported by the Seafield, Belleisle and Tam O’Shanter clubs.

More than 30 pupils from South Ayrshire secondary schools took part in the inaugural Provost’s Trophy – two golf competitions in one – with prizes for best scratch score and for best handicap score.

To mark the occasion, Provost Winnie Sloan donated a silver quaich as the top prize in the handicap competition.

Pupils contested the event in perfect weather over 18 holes at Seafield. The day belonged to Elliot Ralph from Kyle with a stunning net 60, after a near faultless total round of 73.

Kyle also took second and third places with Ryan Gribben as runner-up and Steven McCreadie in third place.

The scratch contest was won by Jack McCluskey of Belmont Academy, with Daryl Lynch (Queen Margaret Academy) in second and Ryan Gribben (Kyle) in third.

Leading the field for the ladies was Ali Roy, who carded a fabulous net 66 and, as the sole female entrant, scooped top prize all to herself.

Presenting the inaugural quaich to Elliot, Provost Sloan said: “I love golf, but I’m not able to play as much as I’d like these days.

“I wanted to put something into the sport, to motivate more young people to play on the fantastic courses we have in South Ayrshire and the quaich seemed like an ideal chance to do this and support the competition.

“Elliot’s round was outstanding and even his total score would have won competitions on most days.

“I’m delighted so many young people have taken part and I was proud to see Ali flying the flag for the girls. I hope next year we’ll have more girls in the competition.”
