TWO war veterans from Prestwick are set for an emotional return to lands that saw thousands of fallen troops during WWII.
Charles Forrest, 87, will pay his respects to comrades at Normandy, while 92-year-old Arthur Parkinson will make the long trip to either Sicily or Italy.
The heroes are able to make the journeys thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Heroes Return fund.
Alison Magee, from the Big Lottery Fund, said: “We have been proud to support these men and women who served their country with such distinction during the course of the Second World War.
“Yet again we see accounts of remarkable personal stories which took place in the face of sometimes overwhelming circumstances.
“Everyone we have spoken to over the last year feels lucky to be alive today but nonetheless remain profoundly moved when they reflect on the massive sacrifices made during the conflict.”
Charles and Arthur are eight veterans, one wife, one widow and five carers in Scotland who will benefit from grants totalling £7375 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Heroes Return 2 programme.
It follows the launch of a £35 million trust providing support for former UK military personnel and their families.
The 20-year, independent, Forces In Mind Trust will provide long-term support and advocacy for former personnel to make a successful transition to civilian life, including those who served inIraq, Afghanistan and the Gulf War.
