Belleisle conservatory set for makeover

ONE of Ayrshire’s most historic buildings is set to be restored.

And the group behind the £1 million regeneration of Belleisle Conservatory is pledging to create 30 jobs.

The landmark, which has been in decline along with much of the once thriving park, will be turned into a commercial venture.

Plans to create a tourist hub have been drawn up by the Belleisle Conservatory Group, who say they will re-establish the building as a must-visit attraction.

And the group, who have joined with South Ayrshire Council and conservatory company Solayr, want to make the revamped site a jewel in Ayr’s crown.

Solayr director Gordon Fisher said: “We want to help the council do what they’ve been unable to do themselves.

“This group has come together with the goal of re-establishing a community facility – one that won’t be run for profit.

“We hope this new conservatory can be the spearhead for the rest of the park to thrive.”

Former head of NHS Ayrshire and Arran Acute Trust, Gordon Wilson, is chairman of the group.

He insists the potential for the restored building is huge.

He said: “We’re at an early stage but there are many ideas being discussed about what the conservatory could house.

“Coffees could be served, for example, and there is a rich history of the gardens and flowers here.

“It could also be used for education with schools visiting – the possibilites are endless.

“Ultimately we want to encourage residents and tourists to come back to what was once such a popular attraction.”

The Victorian building, built in the late 19th century, has fallen into disrepair and now lies untouched, ringed by a large security fence.

Earlier this year, South Ayrshire councillor Bill Grant admitted to the Post that he and his colleagues had “failed” the public over Belleisle.

And Councillor Hywel Davies, who labelled the park as “shabby”, suggested the council should sell it off.

The estate, which once attracted thousands of tourists, has since seen popular Pets’ Corner demolished, the conservatory shut and Belleisle Hotel close.

And Mr Fisher added: “We’re looking at this conservatory as a long term project.

“We’re hoping that around 30 jobs will be created over the first five years on top of any construction work that takes place.

“We believe this place can be restored to its original functions and that would be a great asset for everyone.”
