Last chance for battlefield tour

THIS is the last chance for Second World War veterans from Ayrshire to go on a battlefield tour in Germany.

A 10-day coach tour will take place from May 13 to 22, with funding from the National Lottery, and spouses are able to accompany veterans.

The tour comes under the Heroes Return scheme, funding for which closes at the end of the year.

A coach leaving from Scotland is being organised by retired Major Willie Shaw.

Major Shaw joined Ayr’s old regiment the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Churchill Barracks in 1957.

The RSF merged with the Highland Light Infantry in 1959 to become the Royal Highland Fusiliers.

Major Shaw said: “Veterans won’t have to worry about a lot of documentation and form-filling. I can do that for them. All they have to do is make contact.”
