BOOZY Ayrshire drivers could have their cars seized if they’re caught over the limit behind the wheel.
Police revealed this week that anyone using drugs before taking to the road will also face the tough penalty.
The warning was issued as traffic cops launched their festive road safety campaign.
Inspector Drew Robertson cautioned: “Our message is simple and clear – don’t risk it or face the consequences.”
Extra police patrols will be on the roads throughout the campaign, which runs until Monday, January 4.
And morning after drivers will be a major target.
“Extra road policing patrols will be covering the roads in Ayrshire with highly visible road checks throughout the day.
“Those who drink late into the night and expect to be able to drive alcohol or drug-free first thing in the morning will be a particular target.”
The law now allows the procurator fiscal to apply to the court for a warrant to forfeit a vehicle belonging to or used by a repeat offender.
If the application is successful, the vehicle is seized by police and held until a decision is made on whether or not it should be forfeited permanently.
It is hoped that this sanction, along with the mandatory driving ban and fine, will go a long way towards deterring drivers willing to flout the law.
Inspector Robertson went on: “There is a minority of hardcore drivers who continue to put not only their own life at risk but that of others.
“We intend to take a tough stance this year in our efforts to get the message through to this minority, intent on breaking the law and risking lives.”
And he appealed to the public to help save lives and report drivers that they believe are under the influence, adding: “We rely on information from members of the public and encourage them to contact us, even anonymously.”
Anyone with information on drink or drug drivers can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
