PLANNING consent has been given in principle for a new Ayrshire community of 770 homes.
The new neighbourhood of Knockroon will be built between Cumnock and Auchinleck.
East Ayrshire Council last week gave the go-ahead for the new town on land close to Dumfries House, bought in 2007 by a consortium led by Prince Charles.
Knockroon will also feature workplaces, leisure and open spaces, all designed within easy walking walking distance.
Hank Dittmar, chief executive of the Prince’s Foundation said: “I am delighted at this decision. As one of the Prince’s Charities, I share our long term commitment to help East Ayrshire and this decision is a key step in that process.
“Dumfries House is a priceless tourist asset for a region which also benefits from outstanding natural landscapes. It always was our vision to bring the house, the landscape and the new neighbourhood together in a dynamic partnership that would revitalise and bring fresh hope to the region, for residents and visitors alike.”
The Knockroon Masterplan came after widespread public consultation, and it will emerge gradually over a 25-year period.
And it will complement East Ayrshire Council’s efforts to regenerate the Cumnock area.
Robert Lyle, boss of Cumnock’s Royal Hotel, said: “Anything that can help boost visitor numbers to the area in the way Knockroon hopes to do, has to be a benefit to local businesses.”
Donald Stewart, centre manager at Cumnock Community College, said: “I think this is a very exciting development.
“There has been a downturn in the construction industry, and the economic outlook in many other sectors looks bleak.
“But the Knockroon development has given current and prospective students a bright spot on their horizon and a real sense of hope."
A detailed planning application will now be drawn up for the first phase of the development, with a view to construction starting on-site in summer 2010.
