CCTV for South Ayrshire cemetries

SAFETY inspections will take place at graveyards across South Ayrshire.

And relatives will be asked to repair unsafe headstones and memorials.

A council team will check out every cemetery in the area to ensure that the public aren’t being put at risk when they visit the graves of loved ones.

Councillor Peter Convery is the council’s environment spokesman.

He explained: “Cemeteries need to provide a tranquil and peaceful environment for those who have lost friends and family and these inspections will ensure this is maintained at all times.

“We fully understand how important this is for those visiting our cemeteries and the inspections will be carried out in a dignified and wholly sensitive way, with the utmost respect for those families and relatives who may be affected.”

Warning notices will be placed on memorials identified as being a potential risk. Council officers will then try and contact the person responsible.

Meanwhile, immediate action will be taken to make the memorial safe. This could involve it being laid on the ground or fenced off.

Councillor Convery added: “These steps will only be taken where a memorial poses a potential risk to those visiting our cemeteries.

“We will make every effort to contact the owners, offering our full support and guidance to them on how best to make the memorial safe, and this will be done with the fullest consideration for those affected.”

The first inspections will take place from January 4, 2010.
