Medals for brass men Gus and Willie

THE FIRST pop charts were launched in the early 1950s.

And rock ‘n’ roll was in its infancy.

But two young lads decided on a different musical route.

Angus Cochrane and Willie Young joined Dunaskin Doon Band.

And the pair have remained loyal to brass.

Angus and Willie’s wonderful service was recognised by the presentation of medals.

They were handed over by Peter Moore, youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year title.

Trombone sensation Peter was just 12 when he took the title in May 2008.

And he was delighted to be special guest at Dunaskin Doon’s recent 140th anniversary gala concert.

The event packed out Troon Concert Hall, and the band took the opportunity to honour Gus and Willie.

The pair were similar in age to young Peter when they joined up all those years ago.

Band chairman Gus is a bass tuba man, while Willie plays the euphonium.

Dunaskin Doon are going back to Troon for their annual Christmas concert.

It’s in the Walker Hall on Sunday, December 6, starting at 7pm.
