ORGANIC kitchen waste and mixed plastics are the most common items in East Ayrshire green bins.
And the local council is vowing to halt this needless waste.
Council’s have to meet a national target of 70 per cent by 2025 or face hefty penalties.
Councillor Bobby McDill revealed what methods are in the pipeline.
He explained: “The council will also be introducing street recycling units, which will stop waste being disposed of in litter bins being automatically sent to landfill sites.
“This is a simple idea which will help to contribute to the council’s recycling rate.”
And he added: “The introduction of a polystyrene compactor will also have a very positive effect on the amount of waste sent to landfill. Buying any large product normally involves a great deal of polystyrene packaging. During a compactor test earlier this year we diverted one tonne of polystyrene from landfill in only a five day period so this is going to make a great difference.”
